Authentic Fall Decorating

Fall decorating is a big deal. If you're a design enthusiast, like me, you know what I mean. A decade ago I remember buying a brightly colored faux leaf garland and hanging it on our stairway during the Fall.  When we moved to our current home I gave them away, and never purchased anything like it again.  Looking back they seemed pretty unauthentic, and weren't the highest quality faux garlands.

The other day I questioned my design decision of the past, but my oldest child countered my self criticism.  She told me she had the best memories of decorating for Fall, and that she loved it when I would take the Fall leaf garland out. I was surprised, and equally delighted to hear this revelation. All remorse over my questionable past decor choices were gone.  It had made my child happy, and thus served an even greater purpose then satisfying my design aesthetic of the time.

The end of Summer here in Michigan is made alright by our Fall being a glorious time of year.  Autumn's beauty is only surpassed by the bounty it brings when harvest time arrives.  When I decided to do some seasonal Fall decorating this year, I knew it had to be authentic, genuine and real at it's core.  Foraging for leaves, branches, acorns and berries were on my "to do" list.  I wanted to bring nature in, and let it do the decorating.

The traditional tasks included in the Fall harvest are visually appealing in and of themselves, and I highlighted them when decorating our home.  Drying herbs, picking apples, roasting seeds, pressing flowers, and harvesting pumpkins and gourds are some of my favorite things to do during harvest time.  They all make for beautiful work, and decorate the home in a natural way.

Although I prefer natural decor taken from nature, I haven't completely given up on faux leaves.  A quick trip to Michaels proved there are many very life like faux leaf stems and garlands to choose from these days.  I may have to surprise my oldest when she comes home from school one weekend with a staircase full of Fall leaves.
